2018 INSTRUCTOR PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The new #GRIDLIFE instructor program has been developed and tested by #GRIDLIFE in conjunction with instructors from around the motorsports world.  We’re very excited to introduce and develop this model as we genuinely feel it can be the benchmark and gold standard for the future of HPDE instruction.

The following gives a high level overview of pre, during and post event procedures with this new model.

PRE EVENT

Instructors will be paired and connected with their students 2 weeks prior to the event to begin the communication process. Beginners will receive an email with a link to downloadable “Drivers meeting”, along with video track walks and sight laps when available.  This will hopefully keep them from feeling overwhelmed with information day of. This will be in addition to not in replacement of the regular drivers meeting each day on site.

EVENT DAY

OVERVIEW

Instructors will be assigned One or Two beginners to “coach”.  First advanced/instructor session, instructors will be expected to give ride alongs to both beginners assigned to them.  If instructor’s don’t have a car of their own with a passenger eat, they must arrange for borrowing a car, or install a passenger seat.

CLASSROOM 1

The first classroom session will Cover the fundamentals of on track safety specific to the facility, including but not limited to basic safety rules, passing zones, passing procedures, the driving line braking zones and speed limits for the track.

SESSION 1 - ON TRACK SIGHT LAPS

For the first session Instructors will take their students out on track for 7/10th speed sight laps. Instructors will give a verbal walkthrough of the track and all appropriate behaviors and inputs throughout the session. This includes on track entry and exit procedures along pointing out flagging stations and procedure drills for yellow, passing and red flag situations.

SESSION 2 - LEAD FOLLOW

Beginner session #1, beginners will follow pace cars (lights on roof), driven by staff, or instructors not assigned to work a corner for coaching.  One pace car will lead 4-5 beginner cars, and so on.  Laps will increase in pace slowly throughout session.

ADDITIONAL SESSIONS

Following the lead follow additional sessions will include pace cars to keep straight line speeds for the group in check. Beginners will be able to go on track and build up speed at their own pace.

INSTRUCTOR OBSERVATION

For every session instructors will be placed within view of every turn / straightaway throughout the facility.  All instructors will be equipped with radios to converse with all the entire team along with notepads or tablets for note recording.  As cars roll past, their numbers will be recorded, and all instructors will make notes on each car, each lap, every session.

POST SESSION DEBRIEFS

After every session, instructors and beginners will regroup and discuss the session turn by turn, reviewing notes from each turn and when available reviewing video and data from the previous session.

CLASSROOM SESSIONS 2-4

Two or more additional classroom session will take place between sessions throughout the day where additional driving techniques will be covered along with specific corner discussions and an in depth Q&A.

DATA / VIDEO INTEGRATION (BETA)

Working with strategic parters we will be introducing both in car video and on board data into the beginner program. Select Vehicles will be equipped with on board data logging and in car video to be used during the instructor / student debrief sessions. This will be a test bed for 2018 for a select few students and instructors with plans for refinement throughout the year and full integration into the 2019 season.

RIGHT SEAT

When available instructors will be encouraged to give ride alongs to beginners throughout the event. Riding along with your student in their car is not required and completely optional. We encourage the instructor staff to refrain from right seat duties in this model so the beginners remain in complete control of their on track experience.
